Darren Clarke has hailed the ‘special' display of support shown by the Danish golf fans for his European Ryder Cup team on the second day of Made in Denmark.
Fans turned ‘Himmerland Hill’ – the amphitheatre which surrounds the iconic par three 16th hole at Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort – into a sea of blue and yellow when they greeted Europe’s 2016 Ryder Cup captain by holding up signs containing the European flag and a message saying “I’m Supporting Team Europe”.
The Northern Irishman, who was playing alongside one of his nine automatic qualifiers, Andy Sullivan, and Belgian wildcard hopeful Thomas Pieters, admitted he was touched by the gesture and was moved to take his camera phone out to capture the memorable moment.
"The 16th hole was very special with all the European stars up there on the top,” he said. “It was very cool.
"I'm trying to stay off social media at the minute as I've got so many armchair experts telling me exactly what I should be doing, but I think that definitely deserves a post. That was fantastic.
"It was great, and if I'd have managed to fluke a putt in it would have been even better, but that was very special. They manage to put on such a good tournament for us here this week.
"Flemming, the man in charge here along with the European Tour, that was obviously his idea and he does everything he can not just for me but for all the players. He does a wonderful job."
