Cantlay proves his potential

Teenage amateur Patrick Cantlay continued to make waves on the US PGA Tour as he claimed the lead of the Travelers Championship at Cromwell, Connecticut with a course-record second round 60.

The 19 year old American was the leading amateur at last week's US Open Championship, finishing level par and sharing 21st place with compatriot Ryan Palmer.

That was highlighted by a second round 67 at Congressional, but even that card was put in the shade by an astonishing ten under par round.

He made five birdies on the front nine before the highlight of his round arrived at the par five 13th. His approach just carried the water and bounced past the pin and he rolled a testing 19 foot left-to-right putt into the heart of the hole for eagle.

He immediately added another birdie to take him to eight under for the round, and 11 under for the event after earlier finishing a rain-delayed first round at three under.

Remarkably, the youngster kept his focus to close with back-to-back birdies and complete a historic 18 holes, beating a mark shared by four players, most recently Kenny Perry in 2009.

It was the lowest Tour round ever by an amateur, while the last to win an event was Phil Mickelson at the 1991 Phoenix Open.

Having just completed his first year at UCLA, Cantlay has no immediate plans to turn professional and said: "I'm not thinking about that right now. I'm going to try and take care of business this week and then see what's going on.

"But I'm going to stay amateur definitely for the Walker Cup, and my plans are to stay amateur until I finish college."

On his record, he said: "I didn't know that no amateur had ever shot a 60. So that wasn't really in my brain. I knew where I was and I knew I needed to make eagle on 18 for 59. But you know, it's tough to hole it from 152 (yards)."

Cantlay led by four strokes from compatriots Vaughn Taylor - who played 36 holes in the day after Thursday's play was heavily abridged by rain - Webb Simpson and DJ Trahan, Brazilian Alexandre Rocha and Argentina's Andres Romero.

Trahan's 62 may have been eclipsed by Cantlay's efforts, but six birdies in the front nine left the 30-year-old in the hunt for a first US PGA Tour win since 2008.

Six further players follow at eight under, including England's Brian Davis who had been one shot off the first-round lead after completing a 66 this morning. First round leader Jim Renner fell back to three under after a four-over-par second round of 74.
