Bruner to be inducted into National Black Golf Hall of Fame

The National Black Golf Hall of Fame was founded in 1986 by the late Harold Dunovant, whose mission was to ‘recognise and honour the contributions of black golfers and their skills, and to honour persons, regardless of race or ethnicity, who have done the most to promote golf in the black communities’.

“It’s a real honour,” said Bruner. “To be inducted into any hall of fame is an absolute honour, so I’m very overwhelmed. It hasn’t really sunk in yet how important this is.

“By the time I get to the ceremony in Atlanta in May I’m sure it will have done. I know I will have goosebumps – I get them just thinking about it.

“I’m lucky enough to have two grandsons and a granddaughter and I’m going to take them with me. I hope they’ll be proud of their grandfather and that they’ll remember the ceremony for the rest of their lives.”

The NBGHF has inducted 113 members, recognising people, regardless of colour, who continued the core mission. Wally Uihlein, the president and chief executive officer of Acushnet, which comprises the golf brands Titleist, FootJoy, Pinnacle, and Scotty Cameron, and father of European Tour player Peter, was inducted in 1996. Another famous inductee is South African legend Gary Player.

“The whole process started back in October when I had to submit information about what I’d done on the European Senior Tour, then I heard last month that I was in,” Bruner continued. “It was an incredible moment.

I’m very grateful to the European Senior Tour for giving me an opportunity to play and showcase my skills.
