After taking route 66 on Friday, the Englishman moved to seven under par for the championship after 14 holes, within two strokes of frontrunner Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Broadhurst, who joined the Senior ranks last year after claiming six European Tour victories, has mixed five birdies with just one dropped shot to catapult up a congested leaderboard in Angus.

With Jimenez sitting on top on nine under, an impressive five under for his round through 13 holes, Broadhurst and American Wes Short Jnr sit in a tie for second, with a five further players on six under.

They include the fast-moving American Billy Andrade, who reeled off four birdies in a row from the 11th, and the 1998 Open champion, Mark O’Meara. Notable other Major champions, Bernhard Langer and Tom Lehman, menacingly lurk at five under.
