Australian David Bransdon made a blistering start to day two to take the lead at the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth.
The 43 year old began the day three shots off the lead at Lake Karrinyup Country Club but picked up six shots in his first ten holes to get to nine under and sit a shot ahead of countryman Lucas Herbert.
Bransdon was a European Tour regular in the 2006 and 2007 seasons but has played just 25 events since as he goes in search of just a third top ten in his 101st start.
The New South Welshman started from the tenth and birdied his opener and the 11th for the second consecutive day before adding further gains on the 13th, 15th and 18th.
That had him in a share of the lead with Herbert who made birdies on the third, seventh and eighth but another gain on the first saw him hit the front on his own.
New Zealander Michael Long was then at seven under with just three holes left to play as he recovered from a bogey on the fifth with gains on the ninth, 11th, 13th, 14th and 15th.
Overnight co-leader and Perth native Brett Rumford was among the later starters at six under, and he was a shot clear of a large group of players including English duo Jordan Smith and Mark Foster, and Belgium's Thomas Detry.
All the players were aiming to get into Sunday's six-hole match play knockout stage, with the top 24 after 54 holes advancing to the exciting finale.
