Björn on course for Estoril victory

Thomas Björn managed to keep Richard Green at arms length during the Estoril Open de Portugal final round.

The Danish two-time Ryder Cup winner, aiming for a tenth European Tour title and first for over four years, maintained his three shot lead across the first six holes with birdies at the fifth and sixth.

Australian left-hander Green had put early pressure on his playing partner by birdieing the first to reduce the overnight deficit to two.

But Björn birdied the par three fifth and both players saw eagle putts from inside ten feet edge narrowly past on the par five sixth.

The birdie left Björn, who responded to six consecutive missed cuts with a top ten finish at last week's Celtic Manor Wales Open and a successful Open Championship qualifying attempt at Sunningdale on Monday, 21 under par for the week.

Green closed the gap to two with a birdie at the seventh, but then dropped a shot at the ninth after finding sand off the tee only to respond with a birdie at the next after pitching to ten feet.

But Björn made what looked a decisive birdie at the par five 12th after reaching the fringe of the green in two and two-putting while green laid up and saw his ten foot birdie putt slide past.

Ireland's Damien McGrane remained in third on 18 under, with Björn's compatriot Mark F Haastrup a distant fourth on 15 under.
