Björn bags more silverware

Thomas Björn is once again a winner, this time of The European Tour’s Shot of the Month competition for August.

Thomas Bjorn

Having won back-to-back events in August at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, followed by success at the Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre, Björn is currently in one of the richest veins of form in his professional career and fans of The European Tour have recognised the Dane’s stunning shot-making by voting his entry the finest of August’s three candidates.

The purity of the winning shot, coupled with the significance of its timing, coming at the final of five play-off holes in the Johnnie Walker Championship, clearly caught the imagination of fans of My European Tour.

Having already seen off Mark Foster, Bernd Wiesberger, and Pablo Larrazábal in an unprecedented five-man playoff, Björn was faced with the task of one more trip back down the long 18th hole against South African George Coetzee.

Playing his third shot into the par five 18th, Björn punched a wonderful seven iron to within three feet of the hole, effectively sealing victory for the 40 year old.

The incredible shot received almost 69% of the public vote, leaving Oliver Fisher’s two exceptional efforts trailing in its wake.

Of the stunning approach from 148 yards, Björn said: “Those wedges I hit in on the play-off holes three and four were special, but that seven iron on the fifth playoff hole was probably one of the best golf shots I've ever hit.”

In second place was Fisher’s eagle on the par four eleventh at the Czech Open at Prosper Golf Resort, the Englishman holing out from 125 yards in the third round, while in third place was his impeccable wedge approach on the tournament’s final day en route to victory.

One lucky winner who selected Björn’s shot in the My European Tour section of europeantour.com won an on-course navigation device, the GPS GolfBuddy World.

The winners of each Shot of the Month will be put forward for The European Tour Shot of the Year, won last season by Graeme McDowell for his unforgettable birdie putt on the 16th green of The Celtic Manor Resort which helped Europe regain The Ryder Cup.

Björn joins the other monthly winners so far – Paul Casey (January), Alvaro Quiros (February), David Horsey (March), Matteo Manassero (April), Luke Donald (May), and Rory McIlroy (June and July).
