Birdie bonanza boosts Lagergren

Joakim Lagergren surged into contention at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship after picking up eight shots on his back nine at Kingsbarns on Saturday.

The 23 year old carded a flawless 62, the lowest round of the day, to head into the final round on 12 under par, just five shots behind overnight leader Thorbjørn Olesen.

Starting at the tenth tee, Lagergren opened his third round with a birdie before picking up another shot at the par five 16th.

The Swede then went on a roll, firing birdies at the first and second holes before notching an eagle at the third.

He then made further gains at the fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth holes to complete his back nine in 28.

Lagergren was happy with his score. He said: "I've been struggling on the driving range, missing everything on the driving range.

"I played okay on the front nine, just two under, and then something happened. I just started to make some birdies, hole some putts and hit some good shots.

"I just kept my momentum and just keep on going.

"It feels like I was fighting out there today, even though it was a really good score."

Lagergren singled out his birdie at the par four seventh as the highlight of his third round.

He added: "I was hitting the driver like 30 or 40 metres off-line off the tee way right, and hit out of a really difficult lie to six, seven metres and holed that one. That was at the end of the round as well, so that was really cool."
