The Road to Mallorca heads to Germany this week for the Big Green Egg German Challenge powered by VcG at Wittelsbacher Golfclub & Hotel. Here’s what you need to know before the action gets under way on Thursday.
Charming surroundings in the heart of Bavaria…
Wittelsbacher Golfclub was once where the horses of Bavarian kings used to breed but was transformed in 1986 by Dutch golf course architect Joan Dudok van Heel into one of the most picturesque and beautiful golf courses in Germany. Comprising of narrow fairways accompanied by 200-year-old oak trees on either side and an imposing clubhouse situated at the heart of the course in a park-like landscape, it will be a stern test for many of the golfers competing this week.
A brand-new event…
The Big Green Egg German Challenge powered by VcG is a brand-new event with the last German Challenge taking place at Hartl Resort in 2015 in which Road to Mallorca Number Two Ricardo Gouveia was victorious. Ricardo’s brother, Tomas, will look to continue the family’s success when he tees it up at Wittelsbacher Golfclub this week, his fourth start on the 2021 Road to Mallorca.
A field full of proven winners…
A strong field will tee it up at Wittelsbacher Golfclub this week, including the most recent two European Challenge Tour winners; Hugo Leon, who won the British Challenge Presented by Modest! Golf Management last week and Alfredo Garcia-Heredia, who was victorious in the Netherlands at the B-NL Challenge Trophy. Also joining Leon and Garcia-Heredia is Road to Mallorca Number One Santiago Tarrio, who still leads the way at the top of the Rankings after winning the REAL D+D Czech Challenge and the Challenge de España, in addition to a further recording six top ten finishes thus far.
German Challenge Tour graduates…
The Challenge Tour has seen many German graduates rise through the ranks to compete on the European Tour including Martin Kaymer, Tobias Dier, Sebastian Heisele, Bernd Ritthammer, Moritz Lampert and many more. Former World Number One Kaymer graduated from the Challenge Tour in 2006 and has gone on to win on 11 occasions on the European Tour including the 2010 U.S. PGA Championship, the 20111 WGC-HSBC Champions and the 2014 U.S. Open. Tobias Dier, who graduated in 2000, went on to win on the European Tour at the North West of Ireland Open and in the following year secured victory at the TNT Open in the Netherlands. With many Germans proving they can do it on the big stage, this week will showcase another pool of talent coming out of Germany.
