Barham named ambassador for kidney charity

European Tour Golf professional Benn Barham has been appointed as an ambassador for James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer.

The 35 year old underwent a successful operation last year to remove his right kidney following the discovery of a tumour, which turned out to be stage two malignant cancer.

He said he felt extremely lucky and was delighted to be an ambassador for the fund for which he will be involved in upcoming fundraising activities and other supporting roles.

"It's a great honour to be an ambassador for James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer,” said Barham. “As I have experienced kidney cancer first hand, the charity's work is very relevant to me and my life. I hope that golf can serve as a good vehicle in raising money for the charity and increasing the profile of kidney cancer which rarely attracts much public attention."

Broadcaster and Founder of the charity, James Whale said: “We are delighted that Benn has come on board to show his support for James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer. He is a fine example of someone who, despite having a kidney removed, can go on to be successful and lead a full life.”

Kent golfer Benn, 35, has won twice on the European Challenge Tour and since joining the European Tour in 2005 he has played in over 150 worldwide events with his best finish being runner up in the Austrian GolfOpen 2009.

The James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer is the UK’s leading kidney cancer charity and was set up in 2006 by broadcaster James Whale who lost a kidney to cancer.

Today James continues to lead a full and busy life, as do the majority of people who are diagnosed and treated early.
