Alfred Dunhill Championship: Day 1 in numbers

Four days after the 2015 season finish the 2016 Race to Dubai got underway in South Africa. Below are the best facts and figures from the opening round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship from Leopard Creek Country Club.

Joost Luiten plays his approach to the 18th green during day one of the Alfred Dunhill Championship

64- The low round of the day from South Africa's Christiaan Basson. His lowest round on the European Tour since December 2012.

500 - Career starts for Niclas Fasth, who became just the 31st player in history to reach that milestone today.

5- Birdies in a row for both Jeff Inglis and Ryan Tipping today. Inglis started with five straight birdies while Tipping finished with five straight.

2- Players avoided a dropped shot on day one: our leader Basson and fellow South African Lyle Rowe.

0 - Wins for Louis Oosthuizen in 2015. The World Number 15 had won at least once in each of the previous five seasons, which was the best record on The European Tour. He opened with a 70 today despite being five under par after 10 holes.

68- For Joost Luiten today. The Dutchman will be hoping to start the 2016 season well having notched just one top ten finish in the 2015 Race to Dubai. The 29 year old had 16 top tens in the previous two seasons, including three wins.

39- players are yet to complete their opening rounds after dangerous weather saw play suspended at 17:26 local time.

1- hole remaining for Charl Schwartzel, who was five under par through 17 holes before the arrival of the bad weather.

Charl Schwartzel

2 - Wins the last two times Charl Schwartzel opened with a round of 68 or better in this event. The former Masters champion appears to be in position to challenge that streak again and told us he's never swung the club better than he is right now.

112 - under par at Leopard Creek CC now for Schwartzel over 39 career rounds. The three-time winner appears to enjoy the track.

3.63- was the average score of the easiest hole on the course on day one, the par four sixth, which yielded four eagles and 47 birdies.

19,485- The size, in square kilometres, of Kruger National Park that borders Leopard Creek Country Club. The park has more species of large mammals than any other African game reserve, including more than 3,000 crocodiles. Many animals can be seen from the course.
