Albatross helps put Hend in the mix

Scott Hend made a remarkable albatross to catapult himself into contention as round two of the Shenzhen International was completed on Saturday morning.

Over six and a half hours of play had been lost over days one and two due to thunderstorms at Genzon Golf Club, and 35 players had yet to start round two when play got under way on day three.

There was more rain in the morning but thankfully no electrical activity and, with the course softened up, Australian Hend was one of a host of players to go low and get closer to overnight leader Soomin Lee.

The South Korean was bogey-free over the first two rounds as he got to 13 under and nobody could reduce his three-shot lead, with Dutchman Joost Luiten - who also finished his second round on Friday - at ten under.

Scot Richie Ramsay signed for a 66 to sit one behind Luiten, with England's Lee Slattery and Hend then five shots behind the leader.

Hend's 65 equalled the low round of the week and included the rare combination of both an eagle and an albatross from the True Thailand Classic Presented by Chang champion.

A brilliant approach to the ninth produced an eagle to turn in 33 and he nearly holed his approach to the 11th, with the ball finishing millimetres from the cup after spinning back.

Another birdie came on the 13th and while he dropped a shot on the 16th, a fairway wood from the rough on the 17th took a bounce, jumped left, and rolled into the hole for the second albatross of the season.

"It was about 212 metres and I just hit a nice five wood out of a little bit of rough there," said Hend.

"Obviously I got pretty lucky, very lucky to make a two on a par five.

It's my sixth albatross, so it's always nice to make an albatross, especially in the tournament - Scott Hend

Ramsay had played just three holes in his second round on Friday, with a birdie on the tenth, but further gains after the resumption on the 13th, 17th, first, second and seventh fired him up the leaderboard.

Slattery, who made that other albatross at the Hero Indian Open, had been making rapid progress before darkness ended play on Friday, with four birdies in his first five holes from the tenth. He could not maintain that pace upon the resumption as he made six straight pars but further birdies on the second and ninth handed him a 66.

Paul Dunne and Brandon Stone, who both got finished on Friday, were then at seven under alongside Bradley Dredge who made seven birdies in a 67.

Alexander Levy went round in level par, Tommy Fleetwood registered a fifth consecutive round of 69 on this layout and Nacho Elvira carded a 68 to sit a shot further back.

Ross Fisher, Matteo Manassero, Alvaro Quiros and Gary Stal were all then at five under.

Defending champion Kiradech Aphibarnrat looked like missing the cut when he found the water on the 15th for a double-bogey but a chip-in on the 16th and a birdie on the next handed him a 72 and he finished above the mark.

Playing partner and two-time Major Championship winner Bubba Watson signed for a 69 to get to four under.
