Aiken edges into Gothenburg lead

Thomas Aiken made two early birdies to open up a one-shot lead in the final round of the Nordea Masters at Hills Golf Club.

The South African entered the day in a share of the lead with Paul Waring and while the Englishman also made an early gain, that was not enough to keep pace with his playing partner.

Aiken's fast start moved him to 14 under, one clear of Waring and six ahead of German Maximilian Kieffer, Dane Thorbjørn Olesen and England's Lee Slattery.

Aiken has been an ever-present on the European Tour since coming through the Qualifying School for the second time in 2008 but the last of his three wins came in 2014, and this week represents a welcome return to form after one top ten in seven made cuts from 19 events this season.

The 35 year old hit a nice approach into the first to take the lead but Waring responded with a long putt on the second as his playing partner missed a birdie effort from six feet.

Kieffer bogeyed the first but played a wonderful recovery for a bounceback birdie on the par five third, with Slattery making a gain on the fourth to sit alongside him.

Olesen then got in trouble on the third to drop to eight under and the leading pair had a five-shot advantage.

Another excellent approach into the third left Aiken with four feet for a birdie and he made no mistake to edge ahead.

Lucas Herbert, Andrea Pavan, Robert Rock and Marc Warren were seven shots off the lead.
