Aguilar ace accelerates Birdie Pledge total for Mindroom

Chilean golfer Filipe Aguilar’s spectacular start to the second round of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Gullane has proved hugely rewarding to the official tournament charity, Mindroom, today.

Felipe Aguilar's ace at the 160 yard hole secured £1600 for Mindroom

Aguilar blasted from the starting blocks with two birdies following by a hole in one at the third with an eight iron – an ace which propelled the South American up the leaderboard on a calm morning primed for low scoring.

That rare eagle at the 160 yard hole secured £1600 for Mindroom in the form of a special donation by title sponsor Aberdeen Asset Management and The European Tour’s Tour Players Foundation - £10 for every yard of the hole.

The £1600 ‘bonus’ helped to supplement the overall total of the tournament Birdie Pledge, in which every birdie scored is worth £10 to Mindroom, every eagle £20 and every albatross £100.

With Aguilar carding six birdies and that superb ace, the fund-raising through the Birdie Pledge soared past the £11,000 mark, adding to the £20,000 already raised from ‘Tartan Wednesday’ prior to the start of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.

During Round Two, a grand total of 923 birdies had brought £9230 into the coffers, with £260 earned from nine eagles and the £1600 special donation lifting the sum to £11,090.

Earlier in the week, Pro-Am day – known as Tartan Wednesday – had raised in the region of £20,000 from a series of donation, including the Pro-Am fees of the professional golfers, to benefit Mindroom, an independent Scottish charity that supports the families of children and young people with learning difficulties.

A number of those families visited the Players’ Lounge at Gullane Golf Club to be hosted for afternoon tea by members of the European Tour Wives Association, who enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the Mindroom children and parents.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to Mindroom can do so by visiting the charity’s Just Giving page on line:https://www.justgiving.com/mindroom/
