Ace puts Karlberg in early contention in Beijing

Rikard Karlberg recorded a hole-in-one on the 16th as a host of players made a good start to the Volvo China Open at Topwin Golf and Country Club.

The South African duo of Dean Burmester and Hennie Otto, Finland's Roope Kakko and Venezuelan Wolmer Murillo had all got to five under in their opening rounds but it was Karlberg who provided the highlight of the morning as he registered the 17th ace of the season with a seven iron from 201 yards.

That not only helped the 72° OPEN D'ITALIA presented by DAMIANI champion get to four under through eight holes with accompanying birdies on the 11th and 15th, the Swede also won a Volvo XC90.

Ahead of him on the leaderboard, Otto had birdies on the 11th, 15th, 17th second and third to sit five under through 13 holes, with Burmester having played 12 with an eagle on the eighth and a hat-trick of gains from the fourth.

Kakko recorded a hole-in-one of his own at Valderrama recently, and he turned in 31 with gains at the second, third, fifth, seventh and eighth.

Murillo started with four pars but then went on a birdie-birdie-birdie-eagle run to also turn in 31.

There was then another Finn alongside Karlberg a shot behind the leaders, with Mikko Korhonen making gains on the second, fourth, fifth and sixth.

Swedish duo Peter Hanson and Joakim Lagergren were then at three under alongside Australian Nathan Holman, South Korea's Junwon Park and Paraguay's Fabrizio Zanotti.
