A-Z of the Czech Masters

With another hugely successful edition of the D+D REAL Czech Masters coming to a dramatic close, we take you through the full itinerary of a tournament which has become one of the most popular on the European Tour.

The 18th at Albatross Golf Resort

A – Albatross Golf Resort – This week’s venue is hosting the D+D REAL Czech Masters for the third year running since the tournament’s inception in 2014.

B – Birdies–  There were 1,273 birdies after 54 holes.

C – Clubs - Scott Jamieson called on a back-up set of clubs for the second time this season, after his own set did not arrive.

D – Daniel Gaunt– The Australian made a hole in one early in the week at the par three third hole on Thursday. He used a three-iron to launch his ball the 227 yards required to make the 31st ace of this European Tour season, winning a set of spectacular Bang & Olufsen speakers in the process.

E – Evans– Ryan Evans went out in the last group of the day on Thursday afternoon, and ended up leading the field at the close of play after a superb 66.

F – First hole – The 538-yard par five first, which has had a new green-side lake introduced this year, has been the second easiest hole of the week. Over the opening three rounds, it yielded eight eagles, 145 birdies, 199 pars and just 38 bogeys.

G – Green geniuses– Marc Warren and JB Hansen have been the best putters of the week, averaging 26.67 putts per round.

H – Host city– This week’s host city is Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. The course is located to the south west of the city centre.

I – Inward nine– The toughest hole on the final stretch of holes has been the 490-yard par four 17th. There have been 108 bogeys and only 28 birdies.

J – Jeff Winther – The Dane posted a second round 66 to fly up the leaderboard and tie Thomas Pieters for the lead on Friday.

K – Karlsson – It’s been an impressive week from the 46 year old. He dropped just one shot on the front nine in 54 holes and starts the final round five shots off the lead.

L – Last hole– The picturesque final hole at Albatross Golf Resort has had a scoring average of 4.05 this week, making it the ninth hardest hole of the week.

M – Making the cut– Filip Mruzek was the only home player to make the cut. The 24 year old partnered John Daly and David Howell in his first two rounds.

N – Nordic– Players from Nordic countries have been catching the eye this week. Karlsson, Winther and Peter Hanson are all within six shots of Thomas Pieters at the start of the final round.

O – Outward nine– The hardest hole on the front nine has been the 483-yard par four eighth. There have been 112 bogeys and 18 double bogeys or worse in three rounds.

P – Paul Peterson– The American Paul Peterson shot a joint course record 64 on Saturday thanks to eight birdies.

Q – Q school graduate– Leader Thomas Pieters progressed through all three stages of Qualifying School in 2013, earning a European Tour card at the first attempt. He has not looked back since.

R – Ryder Cup – The hallowed Ryder Cup has been on display all week for fans to have their photo taken alongside one of sport’s most famous trophies.

S – Spectators – There were plenty of spectators present to watch Lee Westwood and Jamie Donaldson conduct a light-hearted clinic after their first rounds, during which they hit golf balls at cardboard cut-outs of each other.

T – Thomas Pieters– A winner here last year, Pieters repeated his feat from his 2015 success by taking a lead into the final 18 holes.

U – Up and down - Lee Westwood caught the eye with this up and down on Friday.

V – Van Zyl – The likable South Africanspoke to us about his Olympic Games experienceprior to teeing off on Thursday.

W – Water – Three new lakes have been implemented since last year, including two green-side lakes at the first and 12th holes.

X – X marks the spot – This is the spot where Pieters sank his par putt to take a two-shot lead into the final round.

Y – Year’s supply of beer – Andy Sullivan won a year’s supply of beer after his success in a river green challenge in the city.

Z – Zero bogeys for Pieters in round two– Pieters had a blemish-free scorecard on Friday, sending him to ten under par going into moving day.
