A slice of the Swedish action…

Our press officer at the PGA of Sweden National in Malmö brings you all the action from The Princess by Schüco…

PGA of Sweden National

Four seasons in a day...
...or maybe two - summer and winter. Thursday at The Princess by Schüco started out like a glorious summer's day, with clear blue skies and temperatures of about 25 degrees. Everyone was wearing in t-shirts and worrying about where the suncream was, but fast forward a few hours and the sky was dark grey, there was a strong wind howling and the temperature had dropped to 14 degrees. The referees on the course had coats and hats on and the players had to dig out extra layers. Definitely a day of extremes.

Lost in translation
The nuances of languages can sometimes cause great confusion, but at the PGA of Sweden National earlier this week, a group of Danes had cause for alarm. In neighbouring Denmark they refer to amateur players as “rabbits”, and before Wednesday’s pro-am someone remarked that there were lots of rabbits on the course, referring of course to the golfers. The golf course also happens to be home to hundreds of real rabbits – as in the small furry things – and hares, so the Swedish guy replied: “Yes, but when there are too many we just shoot them.” The Danes must have thought that was a rather extreme way to deal with amateurs.

Dubois on a rollercoaster
Challenge Tour Rankings leader Edoard Dubois must surely be hoping the road in the second half of the season is a lot smoother than the first half. In the past few weeks he has gone from one extreme to the other, from the sublime to the ridiculous. After crashing out of the Madeira Islands Open at 21 over par for his first two rounds, he won two weeks later at the Kärnten Golf Open presented by Mazda at a staggering 23 under par. Then he missed the cut at the Saint Omer Open presented by Neuflize after reaching ten over par, but a week later won the Scottish Hydro Challenge at 13 under, one of the most lucrative events of the Challenge Tour season. Whatever’s next for the shy Frenchman?

Malmö the place to be
Malmö, Sweden’s third largest city which lies just over the water from the Danish capital, Copenhagen, was buzzing on Tuesday night. The large square in the city centre is full of great restaurants and bars, and the place had a great feel – aided by the fact it was a beautiful evening and stays light until about 11pm at this time of year. Many of the players were wandering around taking it all in and sampling some of the fine foods – shellfish in particular is a speciality here given it is right on the coast.
